The Story

A rapid life study — a standing figure drawn in sanguine and grey wash, arms raised behind the head — arrived on a sheet dulled by dust and surface grime, its paper acidic and weakening, with tears and small holes compromising its stability.

Surface cleaning came first, lifting the accumulated grime without disturbing the friable red-chalk line, before the sheet was deacidified to neutralise the harmful acids threatening its long-term survival. The tears were then mended with archival-quality materials, and the holes filled with conservation paper carefully matched to the original support.

The minor areas of loss were chromatically reintegrated in reversible, conservation-grade media, harmonising the repairs with the drawing while respecting its authenticity — the figure's confident, gestural line reading again with its original immediacy, on a sheet made structurally sound for the years ahead.

The Damage: Accumulated dust, dirt, and surface contaminants dulled the sheet, while acidity in the paper threatened its long-term stability, and tears and small areas of loss and holes compromised its structural integrity.
The Process: Surface cleaning to lift dust and contaminants, deacidification to neutralise the paper's harmful acidity, tear mending with archival-quality conservation materials, filling of holes and losses with compatible conservation paper matched to the original support, and localised chromatic reintegration in reversible conservation-grade media to harmonise the repairs with the original drawing.
The Outcome: The treatment stabilised the sheet, improved its structural integrity, and restored its visual continuity — the red-chalk figure preserved in its original character for future generations.
