The Story
A small oil landscape — a houseboat crossing a Himalayan lake beneath distant snow peaks — had dulled under a thick, yellowed protective coating and a settled layer of dirt and surface grime, with age-related cracking and small areas of abrasion and paint loss across the surface.
Surface cleaning came first, lifting the accumulated dirt and contaminants, before the aged, discoloured coating itself was carefully removed to recover the painting's original colour balance. The cracks were then consolidated and stabilised, and the small abrasions and losses repaired to restore the surface's structural and visual integrity.
Localised chromatic reintegration brought the repaired areas back into the composition without overstepping the original paint, and a new conservation-grade protective layer was applied — the lake, the snow peaks, and the boat's red canopy reading again with their original clarity, saturation, and long-term stability.
- The Damage
- Accumulated dirt and surface contaminants, together with a thick, yellowed protective coating, had dulled the painting's colour balance and clarity — compounded by age-related cracking, small abrasions, and localised areas of paint loss.
- The Process
- Surface cleaning to remove dirt, dust, and contaminants, followed by careful removal of the aged, discoloured protective layer; consolidation and stabilisation of age-related cracks; minor repair of abrasions and paint loss; localised chromatic reintegration to visually unify the repaired areas; and a new, conservation-grade protective coating applied for colour saturation and long-term protection.
- The Outcome
- The treatment restored the painting's visual harmony while preserving its original character — the Himalayan lake scene regaining its colour balance and clarity, and the surface stabilised for long-term protection.
