The Story

A half-length portrait — a woman in a dark headscarf, painted with quiet, direct attention — arrived with its surface obscured by dust and grime, tears compromising the canvas, and a discoloured, deteriorated protective coating that had thrown off its original colour balance, along with scattered areas of paint loss and abrasion.

Surface cleaning came first, lifting the accumulated dust and deposits, before the tears were mended with archival conservation materials to restore the canvas's structural stability. The aged protective coating was then carefully removed, recovering the painting's true colour beneath it.

The remaining areas of paint loss and abrasion were chromatically reintegrated in reversible, conservation-grade materials, respecting the original paint, and a new protective coating was applied — the portrait's quiet presence restored, its colour depth recovered, and the canvas protected for the years ahead.

The Damage: Accumulated dust, dirt, and superficial deposits obscured the original paint surface, canvas tears compromised its structural stability, and a discoloured, deteriorated protective coating had thrown off the painting's colour balance, alongside areas of paint loss and abrasion.
The Process: Surface cleaning to remove dust, dirt, and superficial deposits, tear mending with archival conservation materials to restore structural stability, careful removal of the aged protective coating, chromatic reintegration of the paint loss and abrasion in reversible conservation-grade materials, and application of a new, stable protective coating for colour depth and long-term protection.
The Outcome: The treatment stabilised the painting, restored its visual harmony, and preserved its historical and artistic integrity — the portrait's quiet presence recovered and protected for long-term preservation.
